Modern Downtown Houston Engagement Session | Marissa + Toan

Marissa + Toan’s engagement session was amazing! When we discussed what they wanted, Marissa knew she wanted to include their pup Oliver, a studio and a downtown feel. Since they are getting married at Annunciation Catholic Church which is in the heart of downtown, it is 100% fitting. As we were mulling over locations, we decided on my studio, have coffee at a cool coffee shop and then to go to a garage downtown and capture them on the roof. Once the plan was made, it turned in a modern downtown Houston engagement session!

Let me tell you about Marissa and Toan! These two cuties met on Coffee Meets Bagel, a dating site I have never heard of. But let’s be real, I have been married for 8+ years, so my knowledge of dating sites is not robust! They were each other’s first match on the site, and after their first date, they never looked back. These two love eating delicious food together, spending time with their family and raising their adorable dog. Even if Oli loves Marissa more than Toan….and when you look at the photos, you can see Oli’s reactions!

I love that we have bonded hard over food, and have tried new and different foods around Houston as we plan wedding shoots! I am hoping we ca have another food date soon, as we plan Marissa’s bridal session!

Sweet Texas A&M Engagement Session | Aubrey + Sean

I need to preface this post by saying that I typically only do one engagement session with my couples. Aubrey and Sean did an earlier engagement session at the Houston Arboretum. But Aubrey entered into a contest run by Zadok Jewelers for one with me and she won! And since their alma matter Texas A&M is a big deal to both of them, we made the trek to College Station. The really fun thing about this session is that as we walked around Sean and Aubrey told me about cool stories about the university. I love how much passion the school instills in its students, it really creates a sense of community. It reminds me of my alma matter Queen’s University…and made me wish we had a mascot dog! As we went to their favorite spots around campus, it made for a sweet Texas A&M engagement session.

Aubrey and Sean wore their school colors for the session. We had the opportunity to shoot on Kyle Field, and it was epic! It was only a mildly super hot day, so we all barely were sweating during this 😉 But it was so worth it! We got images not every couple gets and it was a pinch-me moment to walk the field. Of course we also went to the Century Tree, where these two basically smoldered. And we stopped by Sean’s sister’s memorial to get a few photos as well. Being able to honor her in these photos was important to all of us.

If anything, this session made me even more excited for their wedding!

Fun, Inclusive Houston Branding Session | Modern Affinity Bridal

Hey Houston! Did you know you have a new bridal gown store in town? I was so excited when Hayley contacted me about her vision for this shoot: models in gowns in multiple sizes, ethnicities and genders. Modern Affinity‘s mantra is to be warm, welcoming and inclusive to anyone who wanted wedding wear. Hayley and Joe are so passionate about this that all the vendors they pair with are LGBTQ+ supportive. Once we got started talking about concepts for the shoot, I knew it would be a fun, inclusive Houston branding session!

The Concept

Hayley saw in her head a shoot that had models of various sizes. She wanted a nod to being inclusive in the LGBTQ+ community. And the perfect way to do it was to have balloons that look like a rainbow as a backdrop. Hayley rented a studio for the session, got the balloons and voila! An epic look for photos! The models were all different sizes, ethnicities and genders, which made for completely unique photos for Modern Affinity. As a wedding apparel shop trying to be different in Houston, I feel this shoot did everything they were aiming for.

Contributing Vendors

Branding shoots cannot happen without an amazing team. Here are the awesome people who made this one happen:

White + Dusty Blue Wedding at the St Regis Houston | Andrea + Robert

This past June I had the opportunity to photograph a beautiful wedding at the St. Regis Houston. Fresh from Andrea and Robert’s engagement session two weeks previously, I knew they were going to be a fun, romantic couple to work with. As you know, this was great for me because fun couples are so easy to photograph! Better yet, they were set to celebrate at one of the most beautiful wedding venues I’ve ever set foot in. I may have been more excited than they were! I mean who wouldn’t be for their white + dusty blue wedding at the St Regis Houston?

Andrea and Robert got ready at St Anne Catholic Church, where they were getting married. Andrea had a beautiful bridal suite and Robert a side room. Both areas had great photographic opportunities! The ceremony itself was in the gorgeous church. It was a traditional Catholic ceremony, with touching speeches mixed in. And the church was a gorgeous backdrop for portraits of Andrea and Robert!

The ceremony space was gorgeous and had soft, beautiful lighting. The reception area is where the restaurant area, with tons of natural light. Andrea and Robert had a mariachi band greet them when they arrived and played for them throughout the cocktail hour and first dances. It was a unique touch to the wedding! The reception was decorated beautifully, my favorite being the tall floral arrangements. Or maybe it was the food! Ha ha probably both. You guys know I am a foodie!

The best thing though? It was the obvious love between Robert and Andrea. Every photo of them together is filled with so much love. And I love their portraits! You can see how fun and romantic they are.

5 Things Wedding Hair and Makeup Artists Wish you Knew

Can I be honest for a hot second? When I was getting married hair and makeup intimidated me. Which means I put off finding the right team to hire. Thankfully everything turned out great, but it could have been a hot mess. Since joining the wedding world I feel like my relationship with makeup and hair is very different. Which is why I feel comfortable talking to clients about these things. After chatting with a few hair and makeup frands, this blog is diving into 5 things wedding hair and makeup artists wish you knew.

1. Trial Runs are Very Important

This feels obvious, but you would be surprised the amount of women who forego the trial run. It’s the one opportunity the hair and makeup artist has in understanding as well as executing the look and feel you want for your wedding day. It’s like when couples decide not to do an engagement session. When you go in cold to a wedding, there is a higher chance of there being miscommunication and having the look you want not work out. A trial run gives you the ability to try things out and work with the artist on the best look for you on your wedding day. Plus, if you get a bridal session with your photographer, you can pair the trial run with this session, which is a huge win!! So in close, do a trial run!! Super Fun Spring Minis in Houston

This past spring I held mini sessions that exude spring! With loads of flowers, a couch and a chandelier, the setup was gorgeous. Add onto it that the light was perfect, and these mini sessions turned out even better than I imagined! The set up was dreamed up by Amie from College Park Flowers. This was our second time pairing together for mini sessions, and Amie went all out!! She turned it into a gorgeous, fun spring minis in Houston.

So thankful to my clients who booked: we have the Ferrara’s whose daughters are almost teens and are growing up so fast! There’s the Cortese’s who have a son who is almost as tall as his dad, much to the chagrin of his parents! The Watson’s who have an adorable little boy who loves to be silly and crossfit with his parents. And lastly? We have the Pike’s! Sarah is a previous bride who was expecting for this session, so we turned it into a mini maternity session!

Two Talented Hair and Makeup Artists in Houston

Going into this post I need to preface it with the fact that my knowledge base for hair and makeup is low. I have always been a tomboy, didn’t know contouring was a “thing” until I joined the wedding industry, etc. In fact, growing up, I didn’t learn anything about makeup. That being said, I appreciate the heck out of people who do love this stuff and are artists in this realm. Hence why I am writing about two talented hair and makeup artists in Houston!

So let’s dig into hair and makeup a bit. There are a lot of artists out there and they all have different styles. It’s overwhelming when looking, right? Uh yeah it is. There are some that do drama and glam like no other! Where there is a lot of glitter used, contouring and long eyelashes. Then there are others that do more of a soft/dewy look. This could be translated as more “natural” with less contouring, less eye lashes and more of a sheen on your overall face. There’s still airbrushed makeup on your face, it’s just less dramatic. And there are variations of this in between! I have chosen two hair and makeup artists who are true artists when it comes to creating a look for their brides.

Nyoka Gregory Beauty

If you have been following me for a while, you will know that I have paired a lot with Nyoka Gregory Beauty. I met her thanks to Olivia’s Bridal House, and at our first shoot together I was blown away by her talent and her bright, vivacious personality. Since then she and I have paired together on weddings, brand shoots and more. Her style is more on the dramatic side, she is a master of contouring, the smokey eye and knowing how much glitter is ‘just right’. And this isn’t to say that she can’t do soft and romantic, it’s just that her strength is in statement looks. There isn’t a single bride I have referred her to that hasn’t raved about their experience with her. I think her portfolio speaks for itself:two talented hair and makeup artists in houstonnyoka gregory beauty houston hair and makeup artist (more…)
