Two Magical Venues in Houston

These two magical venues in Houston are fantastic places for couples to get married at. They both have dedicated owners and staff which helps make a wedding run smoothly. I also love how they are both totally different, but magical in their own way! Like my previous post, one of them is located near downtown Houston, and the other is a plantation style venue on the outskirts of Houston. I love both styles, and honestly if I were getting married I would have a hard time deciding on the vibe I want.

Ashton Gardens

Ashton Gardens has two venues in Houston, one on the north side, one on the west side. Both venues have getting ready rooms for the couple, a gorgeous chapel to get married in and stunning ballrooms! As like in other venues, I have a huge crush on the chandeliers in their ballrooms. And their chapel has floor to ceiling glass windows, making ceremony photos gorgeous. I have a special love for the ballroom at the north location because of all the windows there. They are floor to ceiling, and wrap around the space. It gets flooded with so much natural light, and makes my photographer heart happy!!

As for its size, both venues have space for 400 people. With at least ten pews on each side of the chapel, there is plenty of seating. Some for the ballroom, all of the weddings I have captured at both locations, have had over 12 tables, seating 10 people per table. They also have a 5-star chef on staff at both locations, and I have loved all the food I have had from them. Seriously! I have never had a bad experience at either location and get excited when I see an inquiry from a couple and they have booked this venue!

Two Badass Wedding Venues in Houston

These two badass wedding venues in Houston are very different from each other, like in my previous blog. I love featuring venues that are totally different, so you get a good idea as to the variety across Houston. Both of these venues have a totally different feel, one in the downtown area and the other in College Station. I love them both for completely different reasons!

Peach Creek Ranch

Peach Creek Ranch is located in College Station, so it is a bit of a drive from Houston. But honestly, it’s worth the drive. It is a barn-style venue that has a ton of awesome amenities. My personal favorite is that there is a cottage for both the bride and the groom to get ready in. A lot of times, unless you are in a hotel, the groom gets the sloppy seconds when it comes to getting ready. I love that there is a designated space for him and that it is really nice. It makes it easy to capture pictures in that kind of atmosphere.

I also love the waterfront ceremony area that can be decorated in different ways, for different vibes. It’s a big space that can hold up to 275 seated people, which is great for big weddings. From my experience there, it has never felt overly crowded, regardless of the quantity of people invited. Also, the chandeliers in the barn are freakin gorgeous and make first dances look elegant AF. If a barn venue is your jam, you seriously need to consider this place!!

Two Awesome Wedding Venues in Houston

two awesome Houston Wedding venuesI have not written nearly enough about the awesome wedding venues in Houston. Today this stops!! With Houston being so big, there are a ton of venues to choose from. And honestly? If they are a bit of a blank slate, you can transform a lot of spaces into the look that you want with draping and flowers. But then, then there are other spaces that have a ton of character and leave a lasting impression. In this blog post I am highlighting The Dunlavy and The Farmhouse.

The Dunlavy

I found out about this venue from a friend, and at the time I had no idea it was also a wedding venue. It was just a cool place to have brunch and ogle all the chandeliers. Then I was commissioned to photograph a wedding there with another photographer and my perception of the venue changed. It grew! The venue is located on the banks of Buffalo Bayou and Lost Lake in Houston, with glass walls that surround the dining room, so you see all the natural beauty during a ceremony or while you eat. The chandeliers are what make this space so unique, and as a photographer I just love how they add ambiance to all photos taken there.

This space is meant for smaller weddings, with a max of 150 people for capacity. As someone who had 75 people at their wedding, I have a place in my heart for smaller wedding sizes. It allows you to splurge on awesome things like a cool dress or bitchin’ flowers! On top of wedding looking baller here, I love the food!! Every dish I have had at a wedding there has been creative and delicious. (more…)

How to Have a December Wedding That’s not Christmas Themed

It’s natural to make a December wedding Christmas themed, but not everyone wants one. Having grown up in Canada, land of the hearty, frozen winters, I feel uniquely qualified to have great ideas for a December wedding! And no, I am not talking about a Disney Frozen theme, although that would be…interesting.

Textures

I am in love right now with the trend of velvet and suede being popular in weddings. For a December wedding, this is the wedding where you can embrace these fabrics! Everything from velvet bridesmaid dresses to napkins and table runners, seriously do it! I would also be tempted to wrap the bridal bouquet in velvet ribbon as well, for some added drama. I mean, why not?

Harry Potter Wedding Photographer: Slytherin Inspiration

Why Slytherin, when you are a Hufflepuff, Christine? Great question! Obviously my loyalty is with that house, but when my friend Brianne and I were discussing which house to tackle first, we wanted to have something for the fall. And what is more Halloween than Slytherin?

We wanted to make this Slytherin wedding inspirational, to appeal to all Harry Potter fans, for them to see elements and dream to incorporate them into their own wedding day. Of course we know that the house colors are green and silver, but we decided to include more gold in there to warm it up a bit. Plus I love the look of gold with green for wedding elegance.

Stylish Elements

We wanted to play up the snake aspect of Slytherin, which our vendors loved. I mean, that cake! Come on!! Two glorious gold snakes, winding around each other. I brought my Harry Potter dining set with me, and the snakes on the Slytherin plate accented the table scape quite beautifully!

Another aspect we wanted to play up was smoke. We got lucky with the drinks, the dry ice smoked like a gangsta! But the best part? Those smoke bombs! The white one made for a moody, mildly evil atmosphere, and when paired with the drink? Perfection! The entire mood was set!!

My true hope, when couples see these images, is that they are inspired to make their Harry Potter wedding dreams come true! One of the most common areas of concern for couples is to not make their family, who may not share their passion, feel awkward. Of course the elements here are a bit over the top, but I hope things like the invitation suite, place settings and flowers help inspire them!

PopSugar & People

To top all of this off, yesterday this shoot was featured on both PopSugar and People.com! It’s wild to think how fast these pictures were embraced across the wilds of the Internet!

Harry Potter Wedding Photographer | Hufflepuff Inspiration

As a Harry Potter wedding photographer, I have seen and been inspired by some magical wedding ideas! As a Hufflepuff, I felt like it was time to bring the house into the spotlight, especially since the other houses seem to get the most attention {I am looking at you Gryffindor and Slytherin}. Let’s also recognize that yellow is a hard color to incorporate into a wedding look because if you go too bright you blind people. Oh and if you use too much then your wedding looks like a big sunflower.

The key to a Hufflepuff wedding is being strategic in where the yellow and black are utilized! I also feel like instead of a dark black, shades of darker grey and pewter could be used to make things a little less jarring. In all of the inspiration images I have amassed, I have focused on having white being the color that balances the overall look and feel of this inspiration.

Outfits

I love the intricate gold detailing on the bridal gown shown below. It’s a small but elegant way to work some Hufflepuff magic into the bridal gown. It also has an art deco feel to it that I love! I also love the shoes at the bottom as an aded golden touch for the bride.

For bridesmaid dresses I embraced the idea of gold glitter glam!! Paired with black or pewter heels, it is the perfect Hufflepuff look, while still being elegant.

5 Things to Think About if Wedding Pictures are Important to You

You’re sitting here thinking “Of course wedding pictures are important to me, Christine!”. But I ask because when you are planning your wedding there are a lot of areas where you can cut costs, and with some of those choices you don’t notice the cut, but in others you do. In all honestly, wedding pictures are an area where if you cut too deep, you wind up with images you might not just regret but ultimately hate. So today I dig into 5 things you should think about if wedding pictures are important to you.

When a photographer is breaking into the wedding industry they typically price themselves in a lower {aka more appealing} price bracket. For reference, the average cost for a wedding photographer, according to The Knot, is $2783. I like to say the you can find a great photographer within $500 higher or lower for this amount. But anything less than $2200 and you are entering into what I call “newer” photographer territory. So to help navigate these waters, where you don’t want to spend an arm, leg and kidney for your images, but you still want the WOW factor, here are some tips in getting there:Swish + Click Photography (more…)

Wonder Woman Bridal Session | Houston Wedding Photographer

Wonder Woman Bridal Session

Finding a lack of ingenuity within the wedding world for bridal sessions and weddings with personality, I have been planning and photographing styled sessions to show you can do this in a timeless way. That was the goal behind this Wonder Woman bridal session. I wanted to incorporate touches that were distinctly Wonder Woman without it being too garish. Weddings are moving more towards a showcase of the couple and illustrating their personality.  And I feel superheroes are vastly under-represented and seen as too comical to be taken seriously. Well, no more!

Inspiration

The inspiration for the Wonder Woman bridal session started with the origins of the woman herself. In her mythology, she is a demigoddess and warrior of the Amazons. Basically, a regal princess. The Amazons from Greek mythology bring to mind lush gardens and greenery, columned architecture and long flowing one-shoulder dresses. I wanted all of this for the session.

With particular attention paid to not making this session too garish, a team was assembled! What makes this have a Wonder Woman feel without being too comic-booky is the dress. And it being combined with the location. Rice University has columns galore and lots of lush greenery. The dress was simple but elegant. It draped over one shoulder and had a gold waistband. As an added touch, a gold lasso was incorporated to hang at her side. The finishing touches were the accessories–with particular attention paid to the head piece. This piece is the most obvious for the Wonder Woman touches, but is still elegant. Overall, I feel this session looks elegant and is inspirational all at the same time!

I held onto these images for a while because it was published in Offbeat Bride in October. When I saw that the movie was going to be released early this year, I decided to roll these images out in conjunction with the movie. Which, I must add, was amazing!!!
