Two Awesome Wedding Venues in Houston

Two Awesome Wedding Venues in Houston

two awesome Houston Wedding venuesI have not written nearly enough about the awesome wedding venues in Houston. Today this stops!! With Houston being so big, there are a ton of venues to choose from. And honestly? If they are a bit of a blank slate, you can transform a lot of spaces into the look that you want with draping and flowers. But then, then there are other spaces that have a ton of character and leave a lasting impression. In this blog post I am highlighting The Dunlavy and The Farmhouse.

The Dunlavy

I found out about this venue from a friend, and at the time I had no idea it was also a wedding venue. It was just a cool place to have brunch and ogle all the chandeliers. Then I was commissioned to photograph a wedding there with another photographer and my perception of the venue changed. It grew! The venue is located on the banks of Buffalo Bayou and Lost Lake in Houston, with glass walls that surround the dining room, so you see all the natural beauty during a ceremony or while you eat. The chandeliers are what make this space so unique, and as a photographer I just love how they add ambiance to all photos taken there.

This space is meant for smaller weddings, with a max of 150 people for capacity. As someone who had 75 people at their wedding, I have a place in my heart for smaller wedding sizes. It allows you to splurge on awesome things like a cool dress or bitchin’ flowers! On top of wedding looking baller here, I love the food!! Every dish I have had at a wedding there has been creative and delicious. (more…)

How to Have a December Wedding That’s not Christmas Themed

How to Have a December Wedding That’s not Christmas Themed

It’s natural to make a December wedding Christmas themed, but not everyone wants one. Having grown up in Canada, land of the hearty, frozen winters, I feel uniquely qualified to have great ideas for a December wedding! And no, I am not talking about a Disney Frozen theme, although that would be…interesting.

Textures

I am in love right now with the trend of velvet and suede being popular in weddings. For a December wedding, this is the wedding where you can embrace these fabrics! Everything from velvet bridesmaid dresses to napkins and table runners, seriously do it! I would also be tempted to wrap the bridal bouquet in velvet ribbon as well, for some added drama. I mean, why not?

Harry Potter Wedding Photographer: Slytherin Inspiration

Harry Potter Wedding Photographer: Slytherin Inspiration

Why Slytherin, when you are a Hufflepuff, Christine? Great question! Obviously my loyalty is with that house, but when my friend Brianne and I were discussing which house to tackle first, we wanted to have something for the fall. And what is more Halloween than Slytherin?

We wanted to make this Slytherin wedding inspirational, to appeal to all Harry Potter fans, for them to see elements and dream to incorporate them into their own wedding day. Of course we know that the house colors are green and silver, but we decided to include more gold in there to warm it up a bit. Plus I love the look of gold with green for wedding elegance.

Stylish Elements

We wanted to play up the snake aspect of Slytherin, which our vendors loved. I mean, that cake! Come on!! Two glorious gold snakes, winding around each other. I brought my Harry Potter dining set with me, and the snakes on the Slytherin plate accented the table scape quite beautifully!

Another aspect we wanted to play up was smoke. We got lucky with the drinks, the dry ice smoked like a gangsta! But the best part? Those smoke bombs! The white one made for a moody, mildly evil atmosphere, and when paired with the drink? Perfection! The entire mood was set!!

My true hope, when couples see these images, is that they are inspired to make their Harry Potter wedding dreams come true! One of the most common areas of concern for couples is to not make their family, who may not share their passion, feel awkward. Of course the elements here are a bit over the top, but I hope things like the invitation suite, place settings and flowers help inspire them!

PopSugar & People

To top all of this off, yesterday this shoot was featured on both PopSugar and People.com! It’s wild to think how fast these pictures were embraced across the wilds of the Internet!

Harry Potter Wedding Photographer | Hufflepuff Inspiration

Harry Potter Wedding Photographer | Hufflepuff Inspiration

As a Harry Potter wedding photographer, I have seen and been inspired by some magical wedding ideas! As a Hufflepuff, I felt like it was time to bring the house into the spotlight, especially since the other houses seem to get the most attention {I am looking at you Gryffindor and Slytherin}. Let’s also recognize that yellow is a hard color to incorporate into a wedding look because if you go too bright you blind people. Oh and if you use too much then your wedding looks like a big sunflower.

The key to a Hufflepuff wedding is being strategic in where the yellow and black are utilized! I also feel like instead of a dark black, shades of darker grey and pewter could be used to make things a little less jarring. In all of the inspiration images I have amassed, I have focused on having white being the color that balances the overall look and feel of this inspiration.

Outfits

I love the intricate gold detailing on the bridal gown shown below. It’s a small but elegant way to work some Hufflepuff magic into the bridal gown. It also has an art deco feel to it that I love! I also love the shoes at the bottom as an aded golden touch for the bride.

For bridesmaid dresses I embraced the idea of gold glitter glam!! Paired with black or pewter heels, it is the perfect Hufflepuff look, while still being elegant.

Top 5 Elegantly Nerdy Themes for Your Wedding

Top 5 Elegantly Nerdy Themes for Your Wedding

I have been stalking Instagram lately for some elegantly nerdy wedding inspiration. I don’t know about you, but I am tired of seeing paper flowers made of comic book pages and a cake that’s half traditional and half over-the-top-nerdy. Come on!! Your wedding can be so much more than this! Thankfully my searches have been fruitful as of late, and I wanted to share the top five themes that have been raising the bar when it comes to mixing elegance to a nerdy vibe.

Star Wars

Star Wars is so much more than lightsabers and figurines these days. I have seen some amazing cakes, beautiful edits, maybe a storm trooper mask here or there, but the point is, people are getting there! Below are my favorite images to help inspire your Star Wars dreams!

Game of Thrones

This theme, especially right now {winter is coming!} is perfect for an elegantly nerdy vibe. There are so many ways you can add these touches without it being over the top…but even if you did, you will see from the images below, that it’s still pretty dang gorgeous! I think you would have to try super hard to make Game of Thrones tacky, and this is not an invitation to do so!

I put this lower because I know I am known for this theme. Not that it is a bad thing, but I love other things too!! I have to hand it to the inspiration for this theme lately, all these planners and couples? You have been killing it! Tapered candles, gorgeous dresses, and sure a wand fight here or there! I have been so impressed with the level of amazing lately that it was hard for me to pick my favorite images as inspiration!

Lord of the Rings

Let’s be honest, like with Doctor Who, this fandom isn’t going anywhere. Sure the movies came out a while ago {let’s not count, it will make me feel old!}, but the love stories are timeless! My preference for elegant touches is elvish in nature, but you can always incorporate a good hobbit touch for good measure.

Superheroes

This is a hot button topic for me, as a lot of men love this theme…and women seem to put up with it. Which is why it feels like this is the theme that has a lot of room to grow. It’s well known for the groom and his groomsmen to wear t-shirts of their favorite characters under their white dress shirts. Or half the cake being superhero in nature. Or, my favorite, a wedding bouquet made from comic book pages. And that’s all cute, but you seriously can do this with a bit more class and elegance!! To be honest, comics and superheroes are so loud, it has made finding inspiration very hard to find, so here are a few images on where you could start to take you wedding!

So leave a comment below if anything here has inspired you! Also coming this year: a total reinvention of the super hero genre for weddings!! I am telling you, I am fired up about making your wedding as elegant/rad as possible!

5 Things to Think About if Wedding Pictures are Important to You

5 Things to Think About if Wedding Pictures are Important to You

wedding picturesYou’re sitting here thinking “Of course wedding pictures are important to me, Christine!”. But I ask because when you are planning your wedding there are a lot of areas where you can cut costs, and with some of those choices you don’t notice the cut, but in others you do. In all honestly, wedding pictures are an area where if you cut too deep, you wind up with images you might not just regret but ultimately hate.

When a photographer is breaking into the wedding industry they typically price themselves in a lower {aka more appealing} price bracket. For reference, the average cost for a wedding photographer, according to The Knot, is $2783. I like to say the you can find a great photographer within $500 higher or lower for this amount. But anything less than $2200 and you are entering into what I call “newer” photographer territory. So to help navigate these waters, where you don’t want to spend an arm, leg and kidney for your images, but you still want the WOW factor, here are some tips in getting there:

1. Do you Mesh?

You are your photographer are going to be around each other all day—on a day that sometimes can be very stressful, highly emotional and a lot of times there is nakedness involved—on your end! Experience makes a difference here, as does their personality. Are you comfortable being mostly naked in front of them? Getting in your dress is a bare-all experience! And sometimes for the men too! I was photographing the details for the men in an adjoining room when the groom walked in, in his underwear. We laughed it off and joked about it for the rest of the day, but only because we had that rapport. Plus, I have experience dealing with near-naked moments and have a few one-liners at the ready for such a moment.

2. Price < Personality

I know I just discussed meshing with your photographer, but how do you get to that point of comfort? And how to you interview photographers to find the best fit for you and your partner? I cannot emphasize meeting in person enough. Ask them to bring a complete wedding with them or send it to you ahead of time. See if they are interested in you two, or if it is all about them. If the conversation is only about pricing and business and doesn’t flow into natural conversation, it’s not the best fit. And you won’t know that until you meet with them in person. I know it is so easy these days to email and text to get pricing and a portfolio, but tone and personality fall flat in these forms of conversation. With this person being in your world for all the moments of your wedding day, ensuring a good personality fit is paramount!

3. Getting all the Right Moments

Your wedding day moves fast, as do the off-the-cuff important moments. I remember the first and second wedding I photographed, I missed moments because I didn’t anticipate them {like the mom instantly cry when her daughter was in her dress and all done up, but walked away quickly to compose herself}. But now I understand an almost unwritten rhythm of the wedding day, things people don’t necessarily talk about, but happen at every wedding. You learn when to anticipate the tears, the wiping away of tears, the guffaws of laughter, the hand-to-chest, head tilt emotional smile moments. Those are the moments people cherish in their album. Yes, they love the formal portraits, but it is those off the cuff moments that wind up on their walls.

4. Plan to WIN

As mentioned above, your wedding day disappears in the blink of an eye. Having a plan for your day, with those important moments {mom doing up the dress, dad seeing you for the first time, doing a first look if that’s your jam} worked in is invaluable. Seasoned photographers know to build these moments into the timeline, ask about it in advance, and want to deliver these important moments to you. Not only will they instinctively know where to be, they will also have it in their timeline to be prepared. Heck I even just recently bought an Apple watch so that it will vibrate each step of the timeline for the day!

5. The Fine Print

One of the few things not talked about as much is ensuring your photographer is licensed and insured. Newer photographers are less likely to be a legitimate business, which also allows them to be less expensive. If they aren’t paying taxes or insurance, then any possible horror stories could happen. They might not show up on your wedding day at all {God forbid}. What if a guest falls over lighting equipment at your wedding and breaks something? Or knocks a camera to the ground and breaks a lens or the memory card inside? A licensed photographer is covered for such terrifying moments. And a lot of times your venue will request proof of insurance from the photographer for such situations.

In the end, getting wedding pictures you love is about value—finding that hidden gem within your price point. If you can afford wiggle room, I highly recommend going with a photographer who is slightly above the national average if the personality fits. Because a great fit is truly priceless.
